Empowering Marginalised Women Through Digital Education

How can digital education empower marginalised women personally and professionally?

Fundación Orange wanted to promote digital education for women in order to close the digital gap. The plan was to provide different NGOs working with women with equipment, content, methodologies, and training for its professionals. Our mission was to create a course curriculum and methodology for marginalised women with low digital skills, but that was able to acknowledge and embrace their diversity – for instance, through a flexible methodology or project-based learning.

We also had to find the best way to train professionals to carry out the courses while preserving the course philosophy – for instance, through active training, coaching, or peer-to-peer support.

Testimonials from some of the students, partner organisations, and trainers (video developed by Fundación Orange):

We followed an iterative methodology, testing and improving throughout the project implementation. This was paired with ethnographic research activities, ranging from co-creative workshops, in-depth interviews and surveys.

Throughout the four years, we developed many materials and reports. Although I led on the development and delivery of these materials, my role was to facilitate collaboration to ensure they were human-centric and relevant to the specific context.

A needs-based curriculum and toolkit, modular and flexible to adapt to the diversity among participants, delivered through a Project-Based Learning approach, promoting personal and group projects led by the women and with an impact beyond the classroom.
The report “Jóvenes con Futuro”, analysing how to enhance the digital skills of the youth to improve their opportunities and social mobility. This was a side project, but it informed the development of materials for the digital course.
